There are numerous ways to point a domain to an alternative domain or subdomain and one of them is by setting up a CNAME record. When you own a domain name and you've set up a website using some online service which supplies you with a service subdomain, you could easily link the two by setting up a CNAME record for your-domain.com that directs to subdomain.provider.com. What you are going to achieve by doing this is that www.your-domain.com will be in the Internet browser address bar while it opens the already mentioned Internet site from the servers of the third-party provider. It is important to know that if you set up a CNAME record, any other records your domain may have will stop functioning, so you cannot have both a CNAME record directing to one provider and working e-mail address with a different one. The CNAME record is always an alpha string, not a number, and sometimes more configuration may be required with the other company.

CNAME Records in Cloud Hosting

If you have a cloud hosting plan from our company and you wish to create a CNAME record, it will take you just a few clicks to do it. You can access the DNS records for all domains and subdomains hosted in your account from the Hepsia CP that comes with every single plan and adding a new record is as easy as clicking on a button, selecting the type, which will be CNAME in this case, entering the actual record value and saving the change. If you've never added this type of record before, we have a Help section with a detailed video tutorial which you can watch, or you can just contact us and we will aid you with this task. If you have created a site through another company, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you wish to designate a subdomain for use with the services of a different provider, for instance Google Apps, all it takes is setting up a CNAME record with a couple of mouse clicks within your CP.

CNAME Records in Semi-dedicated Servers

If you have a semi-dedicated server from our company and you want to set up a CNAME record, it will require just a few mouse clicks to complete this task. The plans are managed using our in-house built Hepsia hosting Control Panel in which you will discover a section committed to the DNS records of the domain addresses and subdomains hosted in the account. To create a CNAME record, you will only have to pick the record type and the hostname (domain or subdomain), enter where the latter will be pointed to and save the change. The new record will be active almost immediately in our system and will propagate worldwide within a couple of hours. Modifying or deleting an existing CNAME record in the account is just as simple and takes a click. In the event you experience any issues, you can go through our comprehensive help article, see the short video on the topic that we have added in the CP, or you can just contact us for help.
